Hyperthyroidism is more commonly seen in cats than dogs.  The thyroid gland works overtime and produces too much hormone, which causes a constant state of metabolic hyperactivity.

Thyroid glands are located in the neck just below the larynx, next to the trachea.  These glands secrete thyroid hormones.  A deficiency of thyroid hormones affects the metabolic function of all the organ systems making it important to balance the system to prevent further health issues.

Hyperthyroid symptoms can vary, below are some of the most common.

Symptoms of hyperthyroidism:

• increased body temperature

• increased heart rate

• constant hunger

• weight loss - despite constant eating

• excessive thirst

• frequent urination

• out of character "snappy" behaviour

With animals who are fed a raw diet, we recommend to feed a variety of bony cuts and not just cuts from the neck area.  Gullets or chicken, lamb or rabbit necks as these cuts contain active thyroid tissue.  Mix up your animals diet with other cuts such as wings, backs, tails, etc.
