Separation anxiety is a condition caused by fear of being alone.  Sadly it is the second leading cause of owners handing over their pets to pounds and havens or euthanizing their pet.  While the behaviours caused by separation anxiety are problematic, it responds well to homeopathy.

Symptoms of Separation Anxiety

​

Animals with separation anxiety exhibit distress in the form of behaviour problems when left alone.  Typically, they will have a dramatic anxiety response within a short time after you have left them.

​

Common distress symptoms include one or more of the following:

​

• chewing doors and door frames and windows, tearing flyscreens in an attempt to find owners

• fence jumping

• hyperactive behaviour even after daily exercise

• whining, barking, howling

• chewing or excessive grooming

• pacing, excessive panting, dilated pupils

• excessive saliva

• excessive urination

• diarrhea

Separation anxiety can develop at anytime or age.

​

Common causes can be:

​

• animals who have had a change in environment, eg., new house or new owners

• been separated too early or too late from litter mates and mother.  Optimum time is between 8 - 14 weeks

• sudden change in routine

• new family members in the home

• traumatic event

• introduction of new pets into the house

​

Sometimes just simply going out to the shop can bring on an anxiety attack as your pet just simply likes to be near you to feel safe.

​

Make sure your pet has plenty of daily exercise and plenty of age/size appropriate toys or bones to chew on whilst you are away.

Dosage: Homeopathic remedies

10 drops on to fur in between shoulder blades, four times per day. 

​

For acute symptoms, dose every 5 minutes for the first hour, then once hourly for 24 hours, 4-6 times a day.  Can also place 10 drops in animals water bowl.
